The 39 km long circular hike "G'schichten aus dem Wienerwald. The Hiking Trail" tells in two scenically varied stages about the cultural and historical significance of this special region in the middle of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. 1. The first stage starts in Baden and leads along the romantic "Wegerl im Helenental" along the Schwechat to Alland, where the second stage leads back to Baden via Heiligenkreuz and Siegenfeld.Excursion destinations, such as those in the imperial city of Baden, Heiligenkreuz Abbey or the Carmel Mayerling, are just some of the numerous highlights, which are described at a total of 35 stations with interesting anecdotes by the author Gabriele Hasmann.connoisseurs will definitely get their money's worth on this hike, as not only are there numerous idyllic places to visit, but several traditional hosts also invite you to linger and enjoy their culinary delights.
Two of the largest protected areas around Vienna are connected via the waterway: The Schwechat, the largest river in the BPWW, flows into the Danube, which also flows through the Donau-Auen National Park.

Route description Winterwanderung G´schichten aus dem Wienerwald. Der Wanderweg - Etappe 1
Ausgehend vom Thermalstrandbad Baden (Markierung 40) steht uns gleich die erste Bergetappe auf die im 12. Jahrhundert errichtete Ruine Rauheneck bevor. Nach ca. 350 m Richtung Süden verlassen wir den Weg Nr. 40 nach rechts und kommen kurz danach an der beeindruckenden und auch archäologisch interessanten Königshöhle vorbei, ehe wir in den WWW 04 münden, der uns wieder hinunter ins Helenental bringt. Der folgende, nahezu ebene Weg (grün, Nr. 40) neben der Schwechat führt uns flussaufwärts an der Cholerakapelle und der Krainerhütte vorbei bis Sattelbach. Ab hier folgen wir der roten Markierung bis Mayerling, wo wir links auf die Via Sacra (01, 04) stoßen und nach ca. 500 m rechts in einen Wiesenweg abbiegen, um nach Alland zu gelangen. Entlang der gesamten Strecken begleiten uns Infotafeln zum Thema Kronprinz Rudolf.
