Burg Rauhenstein
Ruins, Scenic lookout
Description
***Note: closed until 2026 due to renovation work***
Perched on rocky cliffs, Rauhenstein Castle looks down on the rose city of Baden. The ruins from the 12th century are one of the largest castle complexes around Vienna. Over the course of its long history, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Not only the remains of the walls, but also the 20-metre-high tower have been preserved to this day.
In the Middle Ages, Rauhenstein Castle - together with Rauheneck Castle opposite - secured the route from Baden through the Helenental valley. Today, it is a popular destination for short hikes. Villa Rauhenstein lies at its foot: the magnificent building from the late 19th century was owned by Austrian composer Hugo Wiener for a long time until his widow - cabaret artist and singer Cissy Kraner - sold it. Since then, the villa has housed apartments.
Short hike to Rauhenstein Castle
From the parking lot of the Hotel Sachers in Baden, a beautiful hiking trail leads up to the castle: via Rauhensteingasse into the Vienna Woods and uphill to the right, the destination is reached in around 20 minutes. The ruins are free to visit at any time. From the accessible tower, there is a beautiful view - on the one hand of the impressive remains of the medieval building, and on the other of the entire Helenental valley.
